BOSTON — All season long Youth Chris Kunitz Jersey , the Houston Rockets and NBA champion Golden State Warriors ran 1-2 in the Western Conference, eventually ending up in the conference finals with little resistance.
Over in the East, the Toronto Raptors charged to the top seed and appeared to be in good shape to represent the conference in the NBA Finals.
However, the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers, the Nos. 2 and 4 seeds, respectively, overcame all kinds of adversity and open their second straight conference finals Sunday at TD Garden.
For the Celtics, the adversity started five minutes into the season when shiny new free agent Gordon Hayward went down with a season-ending injury. Charles Barkley declared “their season is over” on national television. Other injuries followed as rookie surprise Daniel Theis lost for the season and Kyrie Irving, acquired from the Cavs in a huge deal, was also lost — both with knee surgery.
Valuable piece Marcus Smart went down late after right thumb surgery — and the list went on and on — but it never really stopped Brad Stevens’ team.
“I think in the Toronto series, no disrespect to them, but watching film it just looked very easy at times,” Morris said. “… There was no help, I didn’t see no physicality. I didn’t see any of that. I think that’s something different we’ll bring to the table.”
The Cavs, looking for their fourth straight conference title behind LeBron James, never got anything out of the damaged Isaiah Thomas (hip) and wound up shipping Thomas and fellow former Celtic Jae Crowder out of town as part of a major overhaul at the trade deadline. They dropped to fourth in the conference as the Philadelphia 76ers ran off 16 straight wins at the end of the season.
They needed seven games to dispose of the Indiana Pacers and then rampaged through the Raptors in four straight.
James has been on a tear, averaging 34.3 points Leonard Fournette Jersey Black , 9.4 rebounds, 9.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks as he seeks his eighth straight trip to the NBA Finals.
“Last year, we were a unique group. … Guys that went out and obviously played hard every night,” Celtics forward Al Horford said. “We’re doing the same thing now, but with this group, we have more depth in those positions, suited more to guard LeBron. We have a lot more bodies to take on that challenge.”
They will need them.
The absence of Hayward, Irving and others led to the emergence of Jayson Tatum, Terry Rozier and Jaylen Brown as stars. Smart has come back from his surgery to provide a significant spark. The Celtics needed seven games to oust the Milwaukee Bucks and five to beat Philadelphia.
They are 7-0 at home in the playoffs.
“A lot of people are saying, ‘How can they succeed like this without Gordon Hayward?’ I’ve heard that,” James said. “He’s been out since the first quarter of Game 1, so it’s like, do we even know who they would have (become)? He’s not even, like, been on the team. So we can talk from, like Authentic Ezekiel Elliott Jersey , potential, but he’s been out since the first quarter of Game 1 in Cleveland.
“I get it with the Kyrie thing. He was obviously a teammate of mine for three years, and I know what he’s capable of doing, but they got guys that’s damn good no matter if they are young or not. They know how to play basketball and their coach has put them in position to succeed.”
Tatum has a shot at history in this series. He has recorded seven straight 20-point games, tying him with Donovan Mitchell for the second-most all time among rookies. Lew Alcindor, then of the Milwaukee Bucks, holds the record with 10 in a row in 1970.
Shane Larkin, Boston’s backup point guard, suffered a shoulder sprain running into a Joel Embiid pick and has hopes of returning some time during the series.
“It’s still fresh; it’s still sore,” he said. “I can’t really do much. It’s frustrating, but I’ve got to keep staying positive, keep getting treatment and try to get back out there.”
Horford has been a leader for Boston through the 12 playoff games, averaging 17.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.3 blocks per game — essentially doing everything for his team.
The Cavaliers went 2-1 against the Celtics during the regular season and are 9-3 at TD Garden over the last four seasons.
The Los Angeles Rams have gone from one of the NFL's biggest surprises to one of the top Super Bowl favorites in just one year.
The Rams didn't rest after an impressive turnaround campaign in coach Sean McVay's first season, bringing in an impressive offseason haul led by three former All-Pros on defense in defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib Connor Brown Jersey , along with big-play receiver Brandin Cooks.
It's perhaps the most talent added in one offseason since the San Francisco 49ers brought in Deion Sanders, Ken Norton Jr., Rickey Jackson and Richard Dent 24 years ago and ended up as Super Bowl champs.
The newcomers join a roster that features a promising young quarterback in Jared Goff, an elite running back in Todd Gurley, a stout offensive line led by left tackle Andrew Whitworth 鈥?and perhaps Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald, who held out for a second straight training camp but could be back for the start of the season.
The Rams figure to be challenged most in the NFC West by a rejuvenated San Francisco team that won the final five games last year after Jimmy Garoppolo took over as quarterback.
Seattle still has Russell Wilson but few other key pieces from the 2013 Super Bowl team, and Arizona has three of the division's top players in receiver Larry Fitzgerald, cornerback Patrick Peterson and running back David Johnson, who is coming back from a wrist injury.
Some things to know about the NFC West:
STABLE OFFENSE: For all the big changes on defense for the Rams , they predictably kept things very stable on offense after going from worst to first in the NFL in scoring in the initial year under McVay.
Los Angeles brings back 10 of 11 starters on offense, with the only change at receiver where Cooks replaced Sammy Watkins. It's a far cry from last year when the Rams broke in two new offensive linemen and a new receiver around Goff, who was getting ready for his first full season as an NFL starter in a brand new offense.
This team clearly has big-play potential. Cooks is one of the league's best deep threats and Gurley led the NFL in yards from scrimmage (2,093) and TDs (19) last season, earning him the rare big-money contract as a running back.
JIMMY G: The 49ers fortunes changed almost immediately after acquiring Garoppolo at last year's trade deadline. A team that started 2017 with nine straight losses finished with five straight wins after Garoppolo took over as starter.
He completed 67.4 percent of his passes last season, averaging 8.8 yards per attempt with seven TDs, five interceptions and a 96.2 rating to improve to 7-0 in his career as a starter. His 308.4 yards passing per game in his five starts also would have led the league had he played a full season.
The Niners added Jerick McKinnon as a versatile running back but have some questions on defense, where they are hoping Richard Sherman can get back to his pre-injury level as a shutdown cornerback http://www.officialhockeyrangersshop.com/authentic-adidas-marc-staal-jersey , and someone can provide an outside pass rush to complement defensive tackle stud DeForest Buckner.
QB SHUFFLE: There have been big changes in Arizona with quarterback Carson Palmer retired and coach Bruce Arians moving from the sideline to the broadcast booth.
But the biggest deal for the Cardinals this year is the health of Johnson, the do-everything back whose 2017 season ended with an injury in the opener. Johnson is healthy again, and if he can get back to the form with which he ranked second in the NFL with 2,118 yards from scrimmage in 2016, that should take plenty of pressure off the quarterback.
Oft-injured Sam Bradford begins the year as starter, but he has only played 80 games in eight seasons. He has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee twice, and another left knee injury wiped out nearly all of his 2017 season in Minnesota.
But Bradford is likely only a stopgap. The Cardinals traded up to take Josh Rosen 10th overall in hopes that he can be a franchise quarterback for new coach Steve Wilks.
LAST HURRAH: The Seahawks have been one of the most consistent teams in the league under coach Pete Carroll the past few years. Seattle has posted six straight seasons of top two finishes in the division and winning records, missing the playoff only last year. But much of the core of the team that went to back-to-back Super Bowls in the 2013 and '14 seasons is gone.
Defensive end Michael Bennett was traded, cornerback Richard Sherman was cut and wound up with the archrival 49ers, tight end Jimmy Graham left as a free agent and defensive stars Cliff Avril and Kam Chancellor have had career-ending injuries. Even safety Earl Thomas' status is in doubt as he has held out all offseason in hopes of getting a new contract.
While star power remains led by Wilson, receiver Doug Baldwin and linebacker Bobby Wagner, the rest of the roster likely has too many holes for the Seahawks to be able to challenge the top teams in the NFC.
PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH: Rams, 49ers, Cardinals, Seahawks.
